In this episode, I speak with Pattie Baker, author of Round America with a Duck. Pattie took a trip around America as part of her recovery from being hit by a driver, and found the goodness of strangers and the beautiful community that a bicycle creates. Though she lives in a city that doesn’t make it easy to get around on a bike, she is determined to keep riding hers and planting the seeds of change for future generations.

Interviewing Diane was such a joy. She’s a young mother of 3 children and lives in the suburbs, but dreams of connection in her neighbourhood. Diane wrote a book called "Love Letter to Suburbia" (link below), where she discusses how it’s not too late to transform our spaces and live in community with our neighbours, have walkable neighbourhoods, and less car dependency.

This podcast was an idea I had while writing this book. There was so much running through my mind, and as I gathered it all, I thought about the times I heard about urbanism and learned about riding my bike in winter, and it was mostly from a man’s perspective. I’m not knocking it, I’m thankful for all my cis-male and non-binary friends who have been talking incessantly about riding their bikes year-round. Without them, I wouldn’t have known to try.
